The Hand Maid's Tale

I just finished reading this brilliant book by Margaret Atwood. A couple of things struck me:
1. It was all about making babies at any cost
2. You gave up everything for the church/state (mmm a bit like the law of consecration)
3. They practised a form of polygamy (group sex without the fun)
4. Totally patriachal but with some sadistic matriachs involved
5. Women and men's roles clearly defined
6. Women and men separate for important functions
7. A society based on lies and hypocrisy
8. Several religions/religious groups mentioned but not mormonism
9. Reference to 19th Century Polygamy practised in Utah in the prologue
10. Prior to the big social upheaval high profile women in the church/sect went on tv giving talks and singing churchy songs
11. All other relgions are persecuted/banned

I could be getting paranoid but I think Ms Attwood may have been issuing a warning about extreme religions that want to take over control the state in particular, could she be referring to the morg.

If you haven't read it yet I highly recommend it.
